DNS server

14 Feb 2025
I started with deploying a local DNS server for my home network. After some deliberations, I decided to run it on a VM, in a container. With the help of a tutorial by Christian Lempa, this was successfully executed.

Then came testing and troubleshooting, resulting in making some changes to ny current FB router. The setup thus far is working as expected, but also with regards to the new router project, I have to make some decisions how to proceed next.

Router project

I've put the whole router stuff on hold for now. As next, currently i'm getting into DNS, more specific BIND9. It has been installed on a VM in my little Proxmox hypervisor, as a Docker container.
Still learning – Proxmox, Docker, Portainer and BIND9, but I getting the gist of it. Found already some issues with BIND9 in combination with the FB7590 router (see under New).

Well, it dit not goes as I expected after all, I need to rethink this. Although it seemed to work somewhat, still a lot of errors occurred and especially the whole IPTV was giving me headaches. So I'm going to start from scratch, this time with more research and planning.
For now, we set a breakpoint after the initial login and setup and restart project from there.

I'm finally done with the setup of the router, in that sense it is now working as in intended. But unfortunately, it still needs some tweaking, since the IGMP proxy service is not properly configured. There are a lot of warnings in the log that need to be checked, before we can call it really finished.

Working on the router pages, come on some things in the site's engine, that needs tweaking a bit for the navigating menu module. Changes made to allow for more then 10 pages per menu item. Also removed the link item in the menu's menu XML file, as it turned out is was a bit redundant. The link can as easily be derived from the page item, especially since the file extension is fixed (.htm).
